Coins are small, round, metallic, and reflective. Every one of those properties works against a camera, and they all work against it at the same time. A postcard sits flat under any light. A coin throws that light back at you, hides its detail in glare, and turns your kitchen table into a mirror that the buyer will notice before they notice the coin.
The discipline is learnable, and once you have the setup dialed, it repeats. The first coin takes twenty minutes. The fiftieth takes two.
Why coins are harder than most collectibles
A flat, matte item cooperates with a camera because light hits the surface and stays there. The detail is visible from almost any angle, and the photo looks close to what the item looks like on a table.
A coin is a curved reflective disc. Light hits the high points and bounces, creating hot spots that wash out the very detail you need to show. The low points, the recessed parts of the design that carry the fine lettering and the relief, fall into shadow. A straight-on flash turns the whole face into a white circle. An overhead room light puts a reflection right across the center. Neither photo shows a buyer what the coin actually looks like.
The fix is controlling where the light comes from, how hard or soft it is, and what angle you shoot from. That is most of coin photography.
The light setup that works
Diffused light at an angle is the foundation. The goal is to spread the light across the coin’s surface without creating a single bright reflection point that overpowers the detail.
Two options work well. The first is a desk lamp with a diffusion layer between the bulb and the coin. A sheet of white paper, a translucent plastic panel, or a purpose-built light tent all do the same thing: they take a point source and spread it into an area source. The larger the area of the diffused light relative to the coin, the softer the shadows and the fewer harsh reflections.
The second is natural window light on an overcast day, which is already diffused by the cloud cover. Place the coin near a window with indirect light and it does most of the work for you. Direct sun through a window is the opposite of what you want. It is a point source, and it will put a hard reflection across the coin face that you cannot edit out.
Position the light at roughly a forty-five degree angle above and slightly to one side of the coin. This lights the relief from the side, which picks up the raised detail and creates gentle shadows that give the design dimension. Move the light around while watching the coin through the camera or phone screen. You will see the sweet spot where the detail pops and the glare disappears. That is the angle to lock in.
Axial lighting for proof and high-grade coins
Proof coins and coins with mirror-like fields need a different approach. Standard angled lighting puts reflections into those mirror surfaces that obscure the design entirely.
Axial lighting solves this by sending the light straight down onto the coin through a partially reflective surface, like a piece of glass held at a forty-five degree angle between the camera and the coin. The light source sits off to the side and bounces down through the glass onto the coin, then the camera shoots through the same glass from above. The result is even illumination with no angle-dependent reflections.
This is a more advanced setup and most sellers will not need it for circulated coins. But if you handle proof sets or high-grade uncirculated pieces, axial lighting is the difference between a photo that shows a black circle and one that shows the coin.
Background
A plain, non-reflective background in a neutral color. White, gray, or black fabric or paper all work. The background should not compete with the coin for attention and should not introduce a color cast that shifts the coin’s apparent tone.
Avoid patterned surfaces, wood grain, and fabric weaves that are visible in close-up. The buyer is looking at the coin, and anything else in the frame is a distraction at best and a question about scale or color accuracy at worst.
A dark background tends to make the coin look brighter and shows edge detail well. A white background matches the conventions of grading service holder photos, which many coin buyers are used to seeing. Either works. Pick one and stay consistent across your listings so your inventory has a cohesive look.
The angles that matter
Front and back are the minimum. eBay’s own guidance for collectibles recommends front and back photos and disclosure of defects and centering. For coins, that translates to a clean obverse, a clean reverse, and then whatever else the coin needs.
The obverse (the face with the date and primary portrait or design) and the reverse (the back) are always separate photos, each filling the frame. Do not photograph the coin at an angle that shows both sides in one shot. Each side needs its own image so the buyer can examine it.
Beyond the two faces, photograph the edge if it carries detail. Some coins have reeded edges, lettered edges, or edge damage that affects the piece’s grade and value. A photo of the coin on its edge, propped against something stable, shows this clearly.
Close-ups of specific areas come next: the date, the mintmark, any area of notable wear, any damage, any toning. These are the photos that answer a buyer’s question before they ask it. A buyer evaluating a coin will look at the high points of the design for wear, and a close-up that shows those points honestly is worth more than a wide shot that hides them.
Resolution and framing
eBay requires a minimum of 500 pixels on the longest side of the image and allows up to twenty-four images per listing. For coins, push well past the minimum. A coin that fills the frame at high resolution lets the buyer zoom into the surface detail that determines grade.
Crop tight. The coin should fill most of the frame with a thin border of background around it. A coin photographed from two feet away, sitting in the middle of a large empty background, wastes resolution on nothing. Get close, or crop after the fact, so the coin’s surface detail uses as many of those pixels as possible.
If your camera or phone supports macro mode, use it. Coins reward close focusing. The detail that matters on a coin, the sharpness of the lettering, the texture of the fields, the state of the high points, is measured in fractions of a millimeter. A photo that captures that detail tells the buyer more than any written description.
Color accuracy
Coins range from bright silver to deep copper to rainbow-toned, and the buyer needs to see what the coin actually looks like, not what your phone’s auto white balance decided it looks like.
Take a reference shot with a neutral gray or white card next to the coin. This lets you correct the white balance in post if the color drifted. At minimum, check that the coin in your photo looks like the coin on your desk. A copper coin that photographs orange or a silver coin that photographs blue is misleading even if you did not intend it.
Avoid heavy editing. Adjusting brightness, contrast, and white balance to match reality is honest. Boosting saturation to make toning look more dramatic, or sharpening so aggressively that the surface looks cleaner than it is, is not. The photo is a promise. If the coin arrives and looks different from the photo, the return is yours.
Consistency as a system
Once you have a setup that works, keep it in place. A fixed light position, a fixed background, a fixed camera distance, and a fixed angle mean every coin you photograph gets the same treatment and every listing in your store has a consistent look.
Consistency also speeds up the process. The setup time is the slow part. Once the light, the background, and the camera are in position, you can run through a stack of coins and photograph each one in under a minute per side.
